Obverse: Forepart of Lion
Reverse: Incuse punch / Sunken Quarters
Circa 386 - 338 BCE
Rare and unique ancient hemidrachm (half drachm) from 4th century BCE depicting the forepart of a lion with head left. The reverse depicts a "quadripartite (4-part) incuse square" punch with an 'A' identifying the specific magristrate that made the coin, holding him accountable for the correct weight, standard value and silver purity. This type of incuse punch was commonly used in early coinage.
These hammered silver coins served as standard circulating currency to facilitate local commerce, troop payments, and trade across the Aegean region.
This specific hemidrachm is believed to have been struck in the Thracian Chersonesos (modern-day Gallipoli peninsula), an important region for ancient Greek trade and agriculture controlled largely by Athens.
