Obverse: Apollo
Reverse: Diana Lucifera
Circa 42 BCE
This authentic Roman coin was a product of Monyer, Publius Clodius during the turbulent period of the Second Triumvirate. Hence his initials and m.f. monogram on the back. Said to be struck just two years after the assassination of Julius Caesar and during the same year as the pivotal Battle of Philippi.
The obverse features a beautiful laureate head of Apollo with hair rolled into a chignon with loose curls behind, and a lyre in the lef field, symbolizing civility, music, education and culture. On the reverse, Diana Lucifera (Light-Bringer) standing with a bow and quiver, with grounded lit torches in each hand. Because the moon shines in the night sky, the Romans associated Diana with light, linking her to Luna and viewing her as the sister of the Sun.
