Caria, Isle of Rhodes Coin Pendant (209 - 190 BCE)

Caria, Isle of Rhodes Coin Pendant (209 - 190 BCE)

Obverse: Helios Sun God
Reverse: Rose

Circa 209 - 190 BCE

A rare and collectable ancient coin featuring Helios, the patron diety from the island of Rhodes (off the coast of Caria).  What makes this coin unique and collectible is the budding Rose with tendril and ear of grain on the reverse. The rose (rhodon in Greek) served as a cleaver symbol representing the city's name. Aristoboulus, (APIΣTOBOYΛOΣ the magistrate's name) is also shown with letters P-O (P-O-D-I-N short for Rhodes) on reverse.

Helios was revered as the creator and protector of Rhodes with magnificient facial depictions minted on Rhodian silver coinage like this one.  This is an example of the visual echo of the famous Colossus of Rhodes, one of the "Seven Wonders of the Ancient World".

Bezel-set simply in 14k gold so it could be worn on either side, with a versatile diamond carabiner bail that allows you to add to charms and clip on any chain.
