Greek Coin Earrings with Blue Diamonds (267 - 146 BCE)

Greek Coin Earrings with Blue Diamonds (267 - 146 BCE)

Obverse:  Histiaia the nymph

Reverse: Histiaia on the stern of a galley

Two ancient "tetra-obols" from Euboea featuring the head of the nymph Histiaia on the obverse, and the same nymph seated on the stern of a galley on the reverse.

Ancient Euboea was located in the Aegean Sea, directly off the eastern coast of mainland Greece. It is the second-largest Greek island after Crete and is known today as Evia (or Évvoia).  The island of Euboea grew into a major economic and commercial hub, reflected by the massive output of these silver fractions. Commonly referred to as tetrobols (equal to 4 obols or 2/3 of a drachma), and could buy everyday goods like several litres of wine or multiple loaves of bread.

These tetraobols were minted extensively during the Hellenistic period, particularly from the 3rd to 2nd centuries BCE.

These earrings are paired with natural, teal-blue diamonds and feature the nymph and boat on front.  Bezel-st in 14k gold with an easy to use wire that allows the charm to dangle gently when worn.  The little coins are lightweight and comfortable for every-day wear.  Certain to be a conversation piece!

  • Approx. 12mm diameter
  • Overall wire length 1.25" inches (33mm long)
  • 2mm natural blue diamonds
  • Arrives in satin bag with polishing cloth
  • Certificate of Authenticity provided

Each coin was hand minted thousands of years ago, one at a time, resulting in interesting asymmetry.
