Greek Coin Earrings with Imperial Spinel (267 - 146 BCE)

Greek Coin Earrings with Imperial Spinel (267 - 146 BCE)

Obverse:  Histiaia the nymph

Reverse: Histiaia on the stern of a galley

A playful set of "tetra-obols" from Euboea, Greece featuring the portrait of the nymph Histiaia on the obverse and the nymph seated on the stern of a galley on the reverse.  Each earring features either side of the coin and are paired with highly prized pink Imperial Spinel from Burma.

Ancient Euboea was located in the Aegean Sea, directly off the eastern coast of mainland Greece. It is the second-largest Greek island after Crete and is known today as Evia (or Évvoia). The island of Euboea grew into a major economic and commercial hub, reflected by the massive output of these silver fractions like these. Commonly referred to as tetrobols (equal to 4 obols or 2/3 of a drachma), they could buy everyday goods like several litres of wine or multiple loaves of bread.

These earrings are paired with unique, blush-pink Spinel set in shiny 14k gold bezels.  The 14k gold wire allows the charm to dangle gently when worn and are lightweight and comfortable for every-day wear.  Certain to be a conversation piece!

  • Approx. 12mm diameter each
  • Overall wire length 1.25" inches (33mm long)
  • 2.5mm Imperial Spinel (Burma - Mogok Valley Myanmar)
  • Certificate of Authenticity provided

Procured and hand fabricated with 14k gold by Cynthia Green, making each a one-of-a-kind keepsake.
