Small Greek Larissa and Horse Coin Necklace (4th - 3rd c BCE)

Small Greek Larissa and Horse Coin Necklace (4th - 3rd c BCE)

Circa: 4th - 3rd c BCE

Obverse: Larissa

Reverse:  Grazing Horse

A silver diobol from Thessaly minted around the 4th to 3rd c BCE featuring the nymph Larissa with a grazing horse on the reverse. Larissa was one of the most prominent poleis (city-states) in the region named after the local water nymph Larissa.

Thessaly was legendary throughout the ancient Greek world for its exceptional horses and cavalry. Horse imagery on coinage—like the grazing one shown on this coin, was a proud civic symbol of this equestrian culture.

In the mid-4th to early 3rd centuries BC, a silver obol was a piece of "small change" for everyday life. Because 6 obols made up 1 drachma (the standard daily wage for a skilled craftsman or soldier), an obol represented roughly a few hours of labor or a baseline allowance for daily survival

This rare and ancient diobol was carefully bezel-set in 14k gold and hung on a dainty 14k gold wheat chain (included) which can be easily removed to add to with other charms and necklaces.
