Circa: 65-35 B.C.E.
Obverse: Draped bust of Zoilos II - Bactria
Reverse: Athena holding aegis shield on left arm, thunderbolt in right
Zoilos II was an Indo-Greek king who ruled in eastern Punjab and reigned c. 55–35 BCE. He may have been the Bactrian ally of Marcus Antonius (Marc Antony) and Cleopatra VII referred to by Virgil in his vision of the Battle of Actium in The Aeneid, Bk.VIII, 688. All these kings used the same symbol as Apollodotus II, the fighting Pallas Athene.
Athena symbolizes wisdom, strategic warfare, and civic authority. Recognized by her Corinthian helmet and Aegis, she represents both the intellectual side of war and the power of the state.
