Circa: 20 - 46 CE
Obverse: Azes on Horseback
Reverse: Athena
This Indo-Scythian billon tetradrachm is an ancient coin typically issued under the reign of ruler Aspavarma, king of Apraca in modern-day Afghanistan.
The obverse featues Azes (or a king in military dress) holding a whip and riding a horse facing right, surrounded by a Greek legend (BAΣIΛEΩΣ BAΣIΛEΩN MEΓAΛOY AZOY). The reverse includes Athena standing with a spear and shield, raising her hand in a blessing gesture, accompanied by Kharosthi inscription (Imtravarmaputrasa Aspavarmasa).
The Apraca rulers excelled at surviving and thriving amidst massive geopolitical shifts. They were not a fully independent empire, but rather an autonomous dynasty that ruled by forming tight military and political alliances with the dominant super-powers of the era.
Interestingly, the Apraca dynasty was famously and deeply devoted to Mahayana Buddhism. They are heavily documented in archaeology not just by coins, but by highly detailed inscribed silver and stone Buddhist reliquaries found in the Bajaur area.
The vallian coin is bezel-set with a fine silver and a premium Argentium sterling bail with a strong box chain and spring clasp. Fine silver and Argentium sterling are used because of its brighter, white color and resistance to tarnishing.
A handsome universal piece that can be worn alone or paired with more chains or leather!
