Greek Gorgon Coin Pendant in Gold (480 - 450 BCE)

Greek Gorgon Coin Pendant in Gold (480 - 450 BCE)

Obverse: Gorgoneion with protruding tongue
Reverse: Standing bull with head turned

This is a very early hemidrachm minted in ancient Greek city of Parion, Mysia in the 5th century BCE.   Here the gorgon, presumably Medusa, is portrayed as a hideous monster surrounded by serpents. The reverse has a standing bull (flipped head to toe) with its head turned back accompanied by ethnic letters ΠA (abbreviation for Parion).

The city of Parion was located on the coast of the Propontis (Sea of Marmara) in modern-day Turkey. Parion was a key ancient Greek port and a major customs station for naval trade. The terrifying face of Medusa or a Gorgon (gorgoneion) served as an apotropaic device—an amulet meant to ward off evil spirits and protect the viewer or city. The bull commonly represented agricultural fertility, local river gods, or civic strength and economic prosperity.

Authentic Parion minted hemidrachm in extra fine (EF) condition.
