Roman Imperial Denarius with Black Diamond (198 - 217 CE)

Roman Imperial Denarius with Black Diamond (198 - 217 CE)

Circa: 198 - 217 CE (A.D.)

Obverse: Laureate head of Emperor Caracalla wearing wreath

Reverse: Aequitas - holding scales in left hand (symbolizing 'Fair dealing') and a cornucopia (prosperity) in right, with inscription "Moneta"

Lucius Septimius Bassianus (aka: Caracalla) was born in Lugdunum in C.E. 188 (AD), while his father was serving as governor of Gaul. Lucius Septimius Bassianus.

His father, Septimius Severus, seized the throne and defended it against all rival claimants during the civil wars of C.E. 193-197.  Bassianus was named Caesar in 195 and was further elevated to co-Augustus with his father three years later, when he was only 10.

His name was changed to Marcus Aurelius Antoninus in honor of the revered Antonine dynasty, but the boy was said to prefer barbarian manners and fashions, and he soon earned a nickname after a type of hooded Germanic cloak he liked to wear - Caracalla (or, in modern terms, "hoodie").
