Ancient Parthian Coin with Garnet (190 - 208 CE)
Ancient Parthian Coin with Garnet (190 - 208 CE)
Parthian Kingdom - Circa: 190-208 C.E. (AD)
Obverse: Bust of King Osroes II
Reverse: The traditional Parthian archer (Arsaces I) seated right on a throne, holding a bow.
Osroes II was a Parthian usurper who issued silver drachms, primarily from the Ecbatana mint, during a brief period of civil strife. These coins feature a distinctive long-bearded bust wearing a pearl-decorated tiara, typically with a blundered Greek inscription and an archer seated on the reverse.
These coins are rare evidence of a rival ruler during the chaotic final decades of the Parthian Empire before its fall to the Sassanids. The "tiara with earflaps" and long beard are key diagnostic features used to distinguish Osroes II from contemporary rulers like Vologases IV or Pakoros I.
