Ancient Parthian Coin with Blue Sapphire (128 - 147 CE)
Ancient Parthian Coin with Blue Sapphire (128 - 147 CE)
Circa: 128 - 147 C.E. (AD)
Obverse: Pakoros I "King of Kings" / Mithradates V
Reverse: Arsaces I (first King of Parthia), holding a bow
Pakoros I was a Parthian King known as "King of Kings," but he isn't typically identified as Mithradates V. He was the son of Orodes II, a major Parthian ruler who fought Rome, and his name is linked to the Parthian dynasty that included rulers like Mithradates I and Mithradates II. Pakoros I himself achieved fame for campaigns against Rome, particularly a significant invasion of Syria and Judea in the 1st century BCE.
Though he was ultimately killed in battle, 'Mithradates V' usually refers to other figures in Hellenistic kingdoms not directly associated with this prominent Parthian.
There are similar coins found with Mithradates I and II as well; Pakoros 'King of Kings' being the more sought after. See Osroes II listing here.
