In the Hellenistic period, elite women frequently wore pearls. Prior to 4th c BCE, pearls were exceptionally rare in the Greek world, but Alexander the Great’s conquests of the Persian Empire opened massive trade routes into India, the Persian Gulf, and the Red Sea, flooding the Mediterranean with exotic luxury goods. Pearls were incredibly expensive and became a direct proclamation of wealth, elite social rank, and cosmopolitan taste.

Caring for silk-strung pearls:
Silk-knotted pearls give a luxurious and organic feel while protecting the pearls from rubbing.
Pearls strung with silk should be stored in the Ionia satin pouch provided (not a plastic bag) to protect the pearl nacre finish from scratching up against other articles and allowing them to breath. Do not hang; lay flat to avoid stretching.
Do not allow your pearls to get wet or in contact with perfume or lotions; avoid showering or immersing in water. Your precious pearls should be the last thing you put on, and first thing you take off (before showering!)
If restringing is needed - we are happy to do this for you; please email Cynthia at admin@ioniajewelry.com.
